Basin & Range

The Basin and Range region extends over much of the western United States, from the Sierra Nevada range in California, across Nevada, and into Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. The area's topography is distinguished by a series of north-south running mountain ranges separated by flat arid basins.

I have photographed in the Basin and Range region for several decades, sometimes reaching north into Wyoming and Montana as well. I am struck by the vast open spaces, by mountains shooting up from the desert floor, by alkali flats and azure inland seas. But Basin and Range country is also a human landscape. I am drawn to the profound beauty of this austere landscape and to the cultural artifacts that suggest how we occupy it.  Back to Series
